The Quick Guide to a Troublesome Washing Machine

The good news is that there aren’t actually all that many possibilities here, which means locating your problem and finding the right solution tends to be fairly fast and easy. We’ll start at the top, and thus simplest, and work our way down:

  1. Does the washing machine have electricity? It’s an easy problem to have, and an easy one to miss, too! First ensure the washer’s electrical connections are all secure. All good there? Alrighty, then go check to be sure the washer breaker didn’t trip at the breaker box. It should be on its own dedicated circuit (and if it’s not, it needs to be!).
  2. Is the current load uneven? Washing machines have a sensor in them that shuts the load down if it gets too off balance. If the washer stopped spinning in the middle of a wash, this is your most likely cause, and is easily fixed by simply redistributing the load.
  3. Check for resistance. Can you turn the drum (the middle bit) too easily? There should be some resistance to manual turning, and if there isn’t, the belt probably broke. It’s not something you’ll want to replace on your own, but an appliance professional can get it done pretty quickly.
  4. Is the lid operating properly? Washers have to stay closed to work, and how this happens is by way of a sensor that the lid engages when closed. You can locate this sensor in the form of a little switch and press it manually. If you press it and the washer kicks into action, then the lid or sensor needs to be replaced.

If none of these seem to be the issue at hand, they other likely causes are either a busted motor, or wiring problems somewhere down the line. Still not finding your solution, and not sure where to turn? You can always trust the team at Kolb Electric to get the job done, and done right!
