Hot Tub Wiring Requirements
If you’re wondering how to wire a hot tub, it’s best left up to the professionals to avoid costly and dangerous mistakes. Hot tubs need a dedicated 240V GFCI circuit to provide them with the power they need to run safely. As a result, you’ll need to make sure your home runs on at least 100 amp service. Most homes built in the last 30 to 40 years meet this requirement, and many modern homes even exceed this with 150 to 200 amp service. That said, if you live in a historical home in the area, you may need to upgrade your electrical service before any hot tub wiring is done. At Kolb Electric, we can perform what’s known as a “heavy up” to get your home’s electrical service where it needs to be before we install your hot tub.

Hot Tub Installation Safety Precautions
- Don’t install your hot tub under power lines – this is unsafe and in violation of the National Electrical Code.
- Avoid using underground wiring for outdoor hot tub wiring. If space restrictions don’t permit wiring that is at least five feet away and underground wiring is necessary, your hot tub should be installed in a rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, or nonmetallic raceway system listed for direct burial.
- Don’t install low-voltage lighting within 10 feet of the hot tub, even if it is GFCI protected.

Pool & Hot Tub Lighting
Your pool and hot tub lighting are more than just safety tools. They’re also some of the most important aesthetic features of your yard. They improve your curb appeal and enhance your landscaping, so think of them as key additions to your outdoor decoration. Hot tub and pool wiring are hazardous to work with, though, so few Maryland, DC, and Virginia contractors will install them. Even fewer can manage them safely. Kolb Electric is different. We’ve been working with hot tub wiring for longer than many of our clients have been alive. Our business cut its launch ribbon almost a century ago, so we’re pros at what we do.

Your family’s safety is always a priority, so your underwater electric components should always be installed by a professional. We deal in ENERGY-STAR certified products that can save you 75% of your energy bills. We’ll add spotlights to your water features, downlights to your plants, and LED bulbs to your pool.
