The Dangers of DIY Electrical Wiring

Tackling a few home improvement and maintenance projects yourself can be a great way to save money. However, there are certain jobs better left to the professionals—for the sake of your safety and security and so that you aren’t wasting money on projects you may not be able to successfully complete on your own.

The key to keeping costs down and keeping your home or building safe and secure is knowing which jobs make good DIY projects and which require a little more technical expertise—like electrical work. Working with electricity requires special training and skill. It’s far too dangerous for a novice to learn by him or herself.

Why Hire a Professional Electrician?

There are many reasons it’s important to hire a licensed, professional electrician rather than attempt DIY electrical wiring. If not performed correctly, a do-it-yourself electrical repair can be dangerous and ineffective and can even lead to:

  • Fire. An overloaded circuit can be a disaster waiting to happen. Everything may seem fine when you’ve finished your DIY electrical wiring project, but the overloaded circuit will later overheat and cause sparks behind your walls, potentially igniting your beams, drywall, and insulation.
  • Electrocution. There are no “do-overs” when you work with electricity. Touching the wrong wires together or failing to make sure that the current is off can have fatal results.
  • Code violations and building permits. Virtually all communities require you to have a building permit for any significant electrical work. This isn’t just to keep track of the taxable value of your home or office! It’s also to make sure that any work done meets the local building and safety codesIn most cases, the permit must be requested by a licensed, professional electrician or a contractor who employs licensed electricians.
  • Expense repairs. Even if you are able to avoid a fire or other safety issue when performing do-it-yourself electrical repairs, connecting your wiring improperly can cause it to fail. Then, you’ll need to pay a professional electrician on top of the money you already spent to attempt DIY electrical wiring—not very economical in the end.
