What is track lighting?
Track lighting is a highly customizable lighting system that can be used primarily for accent and feature lighting in your kitchen, bathroom, family room, and anywhere else in your home. With a track lighting system, individual lights are hung from a track that screws into the ceiling. Lights can be independently angles and placed anywhere along the track, allowing you to highlight a specific workspace, piece of artwork, doorway or architectural detail. Track lighting is becoming increasingly popular as a way to give your home a subtle modern flair.
Track Lighting Voltage Options
As with most home lighting, there are two basic types of track lighting systems: line-voltage and low-voltage.
Line-voltage systems use standard electrical wires and current from your home—this setup provides 120 volts to the fixtures, and typically uses incandescent spot lights or flood lights with the largest light fixtures.
Low-voltage track lighting systems use a small, built-in transformer that cuts the current down to 12 volts and allows the system to use a greater variety of bulbs and light fixtures. Low-voltage track lights are typically much smaller than line-voltage lighting, but equally bright. Low-voltage track lighting bulbs also last longer, getting about 2-3,000 hours versus the 700 to 1,000 hours a line-voltage bulb will get. You can even use low-voltage LED track lighting systems, which can last an impressive 10,000 to 100,000 hours.
