Hidden Hazards in Bethesda Homes: Electrical Safety You Might Not Know About

We all know that there are risks with say, outlets, or a damaged appliance. But there are plenty of problems that can come right out of the woodwork (sometimes literally!). Be aware of these potential problems, and prepare your home accordingly:

  • In-wall wiring. As something most folks never even see, the wiring that exists in your walls can pose a real issue. It can come as a result of degradation over the years, as a result of water damage from a while back; there are even cases of folks hitting a wire with a nail when hanging pictures and getting a real shock (pun intended, but also true)! Routine inspections by a professional are critical to electrical safety in your home, so if it’s been a while since you’ve invited a certified electrician over, now is the time.
  • Dust. Yep, just plain old dust can be dangerous. Why? Because it is exceptionally light and dry, meaning it is super combustible. Worse yet, it can settle onto hot surfaces like appliances, HVAC systems, and wiring without you ever even noticing. The dust both acts as a catalyst, and a complication, as it will insulate the surface it’s on, making it hotter until the dry stuff eventually combusts. Keep those nooks and crannies clean!
  • Antique appliances. Old stuff can be fun, and shabby chic repurposes are all the rage. We even feature lots of cool throwback appliances on our social media pages! But honestly, they were built for another time, and are no longer safely compatible with our modern Bethesda homes. Using these appliances routinely can create power surges, can overheat the appliance til failure or an accident, and can even massively impact the electricity in your home.
